Babies do not get confused by being spoken to in several languages and they can keep languages apart from a very early age. We speak to Dr. Krista Byers-Heinlein who has done extensive research into this specific and early bilingual langage development in general. She will answer our questions about how bilingual babies and toddlers process their languages and what aspects of language input are crucial for their language learning. Her research focuses on infants and children who grow up in bilingual environments. Most notably, she has made discoveries about how very young bilinguals discriminate and differentiate their two languages, and how children are able to learn words in two languages. Her research is supported by numerous grants including from Canadian and American funding agencies. Dr. Byers-Heinlein has authored more than 45 peer-reviewed articles on early bilingualism in journals such as Psychological Science and Child Development, and in 2018 published a book entitled The listening bilingual: Speech perception, comprehension, and bilingualism.
