Have you ever seen a Canadian submarine guided by tugboats through Victoria Harbour? In this rare video, HMCS Corner Brook, a Victoria-class submarine, is carefully assisted by three naval tugboats: Barkerville (YTB 651), Tillicum (YTM 555), and Parksville (YTL 591), as she departs the Breakwater District at Ogden Point. With HMCS Vancouver, a Halifax-class frigate, providing a spectacular backdrop, the scene comes alive with seaplanes coming and going and the Pacific Guardian pilot boat heading out to sea. It’s not every day you witness Canada’s Navy and support fleet in action together. This is Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, a working harbour at its finest. Correction: I previously mentioned Barkerville as a Glen-class tug, but I’ve fixed that. She is one of the new Haro-class tugs, delivered in 2024 to replace the older Glen-class fleet. This video was filmed on the traditional and unceded territory of the Lekwungen-speaking peoples of the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. I acknowledge with respect and gratitude the privilege of capturing this special event on their lands.
