Have you ever noticed how hard it is to slow down your breath? The moment things get quiet, the breath wants to rush. We call it anxiety, restlessness, or a busy mind. But often, it is simply excess energy with nowhere to land. In this episode of the Om Som Yoga & Ayurveda Podcast, Aaron is joined by Selenna to explore Langhana, the yogic and Ayurvedic principle of calming, descending, and settling the breath in order to slow the nervous system and ground excess energy. This episode is not about breathing more. It is about breathing less and allowing the system to settle. Langhana is the foundation of pranayama, meditation, and grounded asana practice. It is also one of the most misunderstood principles in modern yoga culture, where fast, stimulating techniques are often mistaken for regulation. IN THIS EPISODE, WE EXPLORE: • Why slowing the breath can initially feel uncomfortable • How anxiety is often excess energy rather than a lack of calm • The meaning of Langhana and its Ayurvedic roots • Why the exhale is taught first in classical pranayama • The difference between breathwork and pranayama • How long, subtle exhales downregulate the nervous system • Why energising practices feel good but are not always what we need • How Langhana applies to asana, meditation, and daily life A KEY TEACHING Before anything can be received, the bowl must be empty. Langhana reminds us that calm is not something we add to ourselves. It is what remains when excess effort, stimulation, and force are released. PRACTICAL LANGHANA TECHNIQUES: • Lengthening the exhale using unequal ratios (visama vritti) • Gentle belly breathing and diaphragm awareness • Pausing between postures instead of rushing transitions • Doing less, not more, both on and off the mat • Trusting the body’s natural intelligence to settle If you feel restless, overstimulated, anxious, or unable to slow down, this episode offers a simple and grounded place to begin. Calm is not something you force. It is something you allow. SHARE & CONNECT Thank you for listening to the Om Som Yoga & Ayurveda Podcast.
