AI is reshaping world language education—not by replacing teachers or human interaction, but by surfacing long-standing questions about pacing, assessment, learner agency, and equity. This session examines how Facilitated Interdependent Language Learning (FILL) offers a learner-centered framework for navigating these shifts with intention. Participants will explore how clearly defined proficiency targets, Can-Do statements, and asset-based assessment practices support students in using AI as a learning partner rather than a shortcut. The session also highlights how learners studying different languages and working at varied proficiency levels can pursue individualized learning paths while remaining part of a coherent, accountable instructional community. Emphasis is placed on readiness—what learners need to use AI responsibly, how facilitator roles evolve, and how Nebraska world language programs can leverage AI to strengthen learner agency, clarity of expectations, and proficiency-based learning outcomes.
