Papua New Guinea activist Noel Anjo has criticised East Sepik Governor Allan Bird for urging all Momase MPs to join the Opposition, branding the statement as divisive and contrary to the vision of late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare. Anjo said Bird’s call promotes regionalism rather than national unity. “Sir Michael Somare, the founding father of this nation, stood for a united Papua New Guinea, not regional politics,” Anjo stated. He stressed that Bird’s approach could create dangerous political divisions based on geography. Anjo added that Bird should have instead called on “like-minded MPs” from across the country to support the Opposition’s cause. “We must be cautious of words that divide, especially in a diverse country like PNG,” he said. Anjo’s comments come amid shifting political tides, as parties and leaders vie for support ahead of looming parliamentary changes.
