Back in 1919, physical fitness guru Bernarr Macfadden introduced TRUE STORY, the first confessional magazine. The genre has been with us ever since. Some seven years after the debut of TRUE STORIES, Macfadden tried a new tack: a "true" magazine filled with tales of the spirit realm. GHOST STORIES debuted with its July 1926 number. According to pulp historian Will Murray: GHOST STORIES "was a bedsheet magazine filled with first-person encounters with the supernatural, recounted by the very person who had the horrific experience, usually 'told by' or 'narrated by' an experienced writer. GHOST STORIES ran for a total of 64 issues, lasting nearly six years. In between, it published several hundred "true" stories of supernatural encounters, along with more than a few fictional stories concerning haunts, including Robert E. Howard's “The Apparition in the Prize Ring,” Frank Belknap Long's “The Man Who Died Twice,” Victor Rousseau’s “The House of the Living Dead,” and others. We hope you enjoy our little Halloween Haunt, a look at GHOST STORIES.
