But at the same time, I felt something positive: that women can be each other’s source of strength.” Roqia, Afghani survivor Listen as Roqia reflects on how Petrified Survivors profoundly impacted her and the lives of fellow survivors. Her reaction to the sculpture highlights the power of art, emphasising its importance in strengthening the advocacy of women in Afghanistan and worldwide. Afghani survivors selected the red tulip and almond flower to represent the suffering and pain they have experienced. Roqia describes how the symbols throughout the sculpture can serve as a form of advocacy for all victims of conflict-related sexual violence.
