Santa Monica Police officers swiftly responded to a call on Sunday, April 6, 2025, after a man was reportedly seen stealing the historic Route 66 sign from outside the Santa Monica Visitor Center at Palisades Park. The sign, a popular photo landmark for travelers completing their cross-country journey, stands just outside the Visitor Center building, where it marks the symbolic end of the legendary highway. Officers arrived to find the suspect seated calmly on a park bench, the iconic sign still in his possession. Police detained the man in handcuffs while they conducted their investigation. Despite the unusual theft, the Visitor Center chose not to press charges. Officers returned the sign to its rightful place, and the man was instructed to leave the area.
