We have all heard the phrases “Black Girl Magic” and “Black Girls Rock.” I would propose to add a third, “Black Girls/Women are Resilient.” Resilience is the capacity to quickly adapt to changing circumstances such as adversity, trauma, or various other stressors (i.e., health, familial, relational, workplace etc.). Black women, often caretakers for others, are often expected to ensure that the personal needs of others are met at the expense of their own happiness and peace. Today’s hustle culture encourages African American women to embrace unhealthy personas such as the “Strong Black Women.” The purpose of this video is to introduce or, in some cases, remind Black women that our real superpower is in our resilience. Our resilience is rooted in living a purposeful life that is in alignment with our beliefs and values and the supports our happiness and peace. Resilience is nurtured in our self-compassion, self-care, and self-discovery practices. Most importantly, resilience can be learned. In this video, Black women will learn that it is never too late to build and/or strengthen their resilience muscle.
