Richard Marshall: Electronic Music Producer After running a fledgling DJ Company throughout high school, he moved to Cape Town in early 2000 and immediately took up residence playing the infamous Strutt parties at the Cape's most reputable house music club, The Fez. Through successful music productions and an increasingly open minded approach to music, Richard's DJ career moved into the great outdoors where sets were being performed at all of the Cape's major music festivals; Rocking the Daisies, Earthdance, Origin, Vortex, Global Breakthrough, Alien Safari, Rezonance and MCQP where, along with Shaun Westcott, music direction is handled by him. In 2011 Richard wrote a synopsis for a proposed hard cover, coffee table book called 'Dancing in the Dark' and is currently in negotiations to have this published (being published mid-late 2013). The book will be an in depth look at the history of South African dance music culture, from humble beginnings in the warehouses of rave culture to the multi-million rand, superstar producing industry it is now, and everything in between. With interviews from the people behind the scenes from as long as 23 years ago, the book promises to leave no grimy stone unturned, an exposé on one of the shadiest businesses in business that has brought more joy, fear, money and despair to more people than almost any other kind. Richard also works as a freelance copywriter and journalist for Tonic International and Resident Advisor, among many others. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
