Even as the ever-rising costs of higher education push it beyond the reach of many, and often leading to mammoth debt for everyone else, the rise of peer-to-peer education resources are evolving into an entire new form for learning. In this Skip Prichard interview, Anya Kamenetz, author of the books “Generation Debt,” “The Test,” and “DIYU: Do-It-Yourself-University,” contends that the knowledge sharing on such sites as YouTube represent a new direction for education. “That’s what people find so empowering, it’s leading people to start businesses, to remake their careers, and all through not only technology but peer-to-peer relationships,” Anya says. Anya, who is the education blogger for NPR, also takes K–12 education’s test-centric focus to task, questioning the metrics being used to determine academic progress. In her latest book, “The Art of Screen Time: How Your Family Can Balance Digital Media and Real Life,” she relates how parents can manage the proliferation of internet-enabled devices in beneficial ways.
