Crater Lake Nation Park is the ONLY National Park in the state of Oregon. Located just 142 Miles South of Bend, this is the deepest lake in the United States - 1,943 Feet deep to be exact! Over 7,000 years ago a Volcano named Mount Mazama erupted and collapsed, which formed Crater Lake. The lake was unknown to anyone other than the Makalak people, until 1853 when it was discovered by Gold Prospectors. In 1902 Crater Lake became 5th National Park in the United States, and it was our 5th National Park we have visited!! The lake gets its very popular blue color from snow and rain since there are no inlets that pour into it. Because of this, it is one of the cleanest lakes in the world due to a lack of sediment and mineral deposits. If you plan on jumping into the lake, Cleetwood Cove is the only legal access point to the lake. If you want to explore the lake by boat, and get the chance to explore Wizard Island - this can be done only through the National Park Service which runs the only boat allowed in the lake. Be sure to check the website before your visit. It was cold, windy and raining with very choppy waters when we visited making it unsafe conditions to enter the lake. Follow us on Social Media!
