A video showing buses around Christchurch (Dublin city centre), recorded in January 2026. Dublin city today covers an area of approximately 117 square kilometres, with a vast bus network serving it as well as surrounding areas. However, when the first city walls were erected in the 12th Cenyury, Dublin was much smaller. This video takes a look at the present day bus service, within the area defined by the original city walls. Most of these walls no longer stand, but they defined an area bounded by the River Liffey to the north, and which includes present day Bridge Street, High Street, Nicholas Street, Werburgh Street, Christchurch Place, Lord Edward Street, Parliament Street, Winetavern Street and others. It also encapsulates City Hall, Dublin Castle, Christ Church Cathedral and St. Audeon's Church. 'Dublinia' is the Latin name for Dublin, and the name of a museum in the Christchurch area of Dublin that focuses on the Viking and Medieval city of Dublin. The present day city centre may have moved east, but the area around Christchurch is still a major transport corridor in the city, and is still well served by bus routes. Dublin Bus is the main operator in the area. The Lord Edward Street routing is the primarily used by buses to Tallaght and Clondalkin, with the Tallaght routes going via Werburgh Street and Clondalkin routes going via High Street and Cornmarket. Phase 4 of Bus Connects in 2022 added Winetavern Street to the bus network, with it being used by Ballyfermot bus routes. It also gained route 74 in 2023. Routes 23, 24 and 80 joined route S2 on Bridge Street in October 2025 under Bus Connects Phase 7, but the these three routes are due to be removed on February 8th following customer feedback. Go-Ahead Ireland's first city centre route (route 73, which replaced Dublin Bus route 123) started serving Winetavern Street in October 2025. In terms of non-Transport for Ireland routes, Dublin Express operate two airport routes through the area, with routes 782 and 783 using the South Quays, with route 783 turning off to serve Winetavern Street and Nicholas Street. Also, due to the historical nature of Christchurch, the area is well served by a variety of open top tour buses. All in all, there is a lot of variety to be seen in the oldest part of Dublin city.
