I'm defeated a second time from tramping the Te Hanga Ridge via the abandoned old North-South Track of the Kaimai Ranges due to a weather bomb bringing heavy rain. Instead, we hike from Kauritatahi to Motutapere Hut and out via the Killarney Lakes. See more below. In Part-1 Day-1 we bushbash for over 5 hours up to Ngatamahinerua Trig along the ridgeline that the SAR team used in 1963 to get to the NAC DC-3 Flight 441 crash site, where we find the wreckage, and then our party of four stayed overnight with five other hikers in the three bunk Kauritatahi Hut, no further filming was continued that night. In this video Part-2 Day-2 for the second time, I am defeated and forced to give up on my plans to traverse the Te Hanga Ridge down to Forgotten Puketutu Hut again, which I shared in my video    • Kaimai DC3 Flight 441 - New Zealand's Wors...   way back in August 2021. Instead, I and the lads decide on plan-b to hike out via the North-South Kaimai Ranges Track, back to the Motutapere (4 hours), and out to the car park via a hunters track, a further (2 hours) all the while in heavy rain and high winds. It wasn't without its challenges as one of our party takes the worst wet slip I have ever seen on any of my hikes. The DC-3 aircraft, Flight 441 left Whenuapai airport on 3rd July 1963 and landed at its Tauranga destination 60 years later, what happened in between? Mt Erebus flight 901 was New Zealand's worst but that was not within New Zealand.
