Despite having its roots in social dancing, DanceSport does not really require leading and following in the traditional sense of the word because all routines are choreographed. The follower may be unaware of the next move in social dancing. In competitive dancing the routine is well-known to both partners. Aesthetics—creating resistance and speed, drama and emotion, and the appropriate gender performance—are more important in leading and following.
