Talks from the ESI Systems Neuroscience Conference (ESISyNC) 2025: Not your ordinary brain: Altered states of consciousness and their neural basis ► ESISyNC 2025 Playlist: https://studio.youtube.com/playlist/P... ► Last year's ESISyNC Playlist: • ESI SyNC 2024 | ESI Systems Neuroscience C... High-ventilation breathwork is an umbrella term for a school of practices that induce experiential and physiological changes through the (fast-paced) modulation of respiration. Anecdotally the experiences induced from high-ventilation breathwork practices have been analogous to psychedelic states. However, due to the lack of studies, the extent of their similarities is unclear. In this talk, Evan Lewis-Healey, PhD presents a large-scale neurophenomenological (experience-to-brain mapping) study on breathwork, combining a method to quantify the dynamics of subjective experience (Temporal Experience Tracing) with EEG data. Using a variety of analytical approaches, breathwork was found to have some striking neural and experiential qualities similar to classic psychedelics. These findings will touch on the potential implications for the broader neuroscience of altered states of consciousness and their clinical application. / esi_frankfurt / esi_frankfurt / ernst-struengmann-institute https://www.esi-frankfurt.de/
