Why IP Matters from Day One in Research | Dr. Uroš Ćemalović | Know4Nano Workshop 2024

What do researchers need to know about intellectual property before innovation reaches the market? In this lecture, recorded during the #Know4Nano Workshop at BioSense Institute in November 2024, Dr. Uroš Ćemalović from the Institute for European Studies, Serbia explains why the early and informed management of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) is essential for successful commercialization. He highlights why researchers should start thinking about IP from the very beginning of a project in order to strengthen protection, increase impact, and improve the chances of uptake and exploitation. Using practical examples, Dr. Ćemalović presents the main IP protection mechanisms, walks through the full protection process, and discusses some of the key challenges researchers face when turning research results into real-world applications. Know4Nano is a Horizon Europe project coordinated by BioSense Institute and focused on knowledge and skills transfer for the application of nanotechnology in biosensors for foodborne pathogens. The project strengthens research excellence and innovation capacity in areas such as nanomaterials, biosensors, microfluidics, food safety, project management, and technology transfer, with the goal of supporting the development of innovative, user-friendly diagnostic solutions along the farm-to-fork food chain.
