What are lateral flow biosensors, how do they work, and why are they so important for rapid diagnostics? In this lecture, recorded during the Know4Nano Workshop at BioSense Institute in November 2024, Dr. Daniel Quesada-González from the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Spain, provides an accessible overview of lateral flow biosensors and their role in modern diagnostic technologies. The presentation focuses on the relevance of these biosensors for rapid diagnostics in healthcare as well as for field applications, where timely, reliable, and easy-to-use solutions are essential. Dr. Quesada-González explains why lateral flow technologies continue to play a vital role in delivering fast and accessible diagnostic tools across different settings. Know4Nano is a Horizon Europe project coordinated by BioSense Institute and focused on knowledge and skills transfer for the application of nanotechnology in biosensors for foodborne pathogens. The project strengthens research excellence and innovation capacity in areas such as nanomaterials, biosensors, microfluidics, food safety, project management, and technology transfer, with the goal of supporting the development of innovative, user-friendly diagnostic solutions along the farm-to-fork food chain.
