Great Little Trains of Wales #4: For our fourth railway visit in Wales, we take a look at Wales' longest narrow gauge line 'The Welsh Highland Railway' from Porthmadog to Caernarfon. This 2ft gauge line opened it's full length in 1921 and barely ran for 20 years before the service was dropped in 1937 and eventual dismantling in 1941. The track bed lay dormant for 50 years before the northern end of the line was reopened and over a period of 20 years the line, in stages, was relayed all the way to Porthmadog where it once again links up with the Ffestiniog Railway. The WHR is well known for it's use of the South African railways Beyer Garratt locomotives, which proved to suit the line much better than the original locos used which couldn't handle the steep gradients and sharpe curves the line has to offer. On this day, we see two of the lines Garratts, 138 & 143, taking charge of the summer timetable and cruising through Welsh Highlands. Hope you enjoy!
