Here we have a great video that looks as far back as the early days of Lindsborg all the way to today and unique artwork still preserved at the Old Mill. For this, we bring you an interview from Nov. 10, 1985, with two sisters - Eunice Gunnarson and Margaret Soby - who were the children of local shop owner and artist Oscar Gunnarson. This is the digitization of a VHS tape of an oral history from the museum archives with Adele Anderson (who was assistant director of grants and research at Bethany College) interviewing the sisters. This extended series from the mid-1980s of excellent regional oral histories of the Smoky Valley region by the Smoky Valley Historical Association is posted and presented with permission of the association. The discussion begins with their great-grandparents who immigrated to the United States in the same year Lindsborg was founded in 1869. Gunnar Olson was born in Norway in 1812 and Anna Stina was born in Sweden in September of the same year, so they were 57 years old when they crossed the Atlantic. They continue talking through the generations of their family, until coming to their father - Oscar Gunnarson - and their mother - Marie Holm. With Oscar, we can particularly highlight a unique connection to the museum. They merged their painting business with that of G.N. Malm, famous for his decorative hand-cut stencils. Later, Oscar spent the last decades of his life both painting - primarily winter snow scenes - and creating statues out of cement. These unique (and heavy!) works featured prominent local and national figures, as well as "slice of life" scenes from early 20th Century Lindsborg. The video ends with Eunice and Margaret talking about the statues as they are filmed on screen; many of these are still on display today in the main gallery of the Old Mill Museum! Digitization of these videos was made possible with a small Nutt grant from the McPherson County Community Foundation. #ToTheStarsKS #Lindsborg #lindsborgks #lbk #visitlindsborg #SmokyValley #KansasHistory #oralhistory #oralhistorymatters #oralhistoryproject #OscarGunnarson #arthistory #arthistorymatters
