Mendoza, Íñigo López de (Carríon de los Condes, 1398 - Guadalajara, 1458) Figueroa, Catalina Suárez de (?, 1393 - Guadalajara, 1456) Installed in the chapel of the hospital of San Salvador in Buitrago de Loyoza (Madrid), this altarpiece is striking for its composition and iconography. The principal element is a carved wooden Virgin and Child (a replacement of the lost original), which is flanked by monumental portraits of the Marquis of Santillana, Íñigo López de Mendoza, and his wife, Catalina Suárez de Figueroa, shown in prayer. In the upper part are twelve angels holding scrolls inscribed with the Gozos written by the marquis himself, verses in praise of the joyful mysteries of the Virgin Mary. The inclusion of the Four Fathers of the Wester Church in the predella reflects humanist interest in these intellectuals, who combined pagan stoicism with Christianity. Jorge Inglés, one of the earliest representatives of northern European art in Castile, successfully gave form in this work to a complex discourse devised by the marquis.
