Thinking Beyond Humanity

I explore some of the fundamental differences between human intelligence and several forms of non-human intelligence (NHI) in biology, computer science, science fiction, and religion. I argue that our human self-concept—rooted in our specific evolutionary nature—is only one possible mode of intelligence, and that understanding NHI will require moving beyond anthropocentric assumptions in ways that are difficult for us to accomplish. Drawing on philosophical challenges to the self developed in the Buddhist traditions, I highlight how NHI architectures, in particular the currently popular AI models, relate to our human experiences. My hope is that this will help us overcome deeply entrenched forms of anthropocentrism that systematically mislead us about non-humans, including both the artificial systems we are now creating and the broader non-human world that created us.
