Hi, welcome to Deaf Talks News. Saudi Arabia has ended the Kafala labour system after 70 years. What is the Kafala System ? Why were they banned ? Let me explain. The Kafala system was a sponsorship rule that gave employers. They will get full control over foreign workers. Owners will keep all the documents of the employee. It was banned because it caused abuse and exploitation. Because of Kafala, many Indian workers suffered, especially from poor and middle-class families. One shocking story is about Jacinta Mendonca, a nurse from Udupi, Karnataka. After her husband died, she had to take care of her three children. She saw a job ad in the newspaper. It was a nurse job in Qatar with a salary of ₹25,000 per month. So she applied through an agent. But the agent cheated her and sent her to Saudi Arabia instead. There, she was forced to work for one man’s mother and three wives. She worked 16 hours every day, was given little food, and was treated badly. After great struggle, with help from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Jacinta was rescued and brought back home. Reports say around 23 lakh Indians faced similar problems under the Kafala system. Now, this system has been banned in Saudi Arabia, just like in Israel and Bahrain. Here the employer cannot hold the passport or any documents of the employee. Foreign workers can now change jobs, travel, and return home freely. This is a major relief and victory for migrant workers. Subscribe to Deaf Talks and thanks for watching.
