How To Deal With Conflict When Your Partner Has A Different Perspective?

1. Regulate You Physical Response Most likely during a conflict on different perspective, you two are butting heads. This can cause a flushed face, heart racing, shallow breathing, tight jaw or body, and many other physical reactions. This automatically puts you on the defense for this conflict to continue with a negative outcome. So make an active effort slow down your heart rate and relax your body. 2. Get clarification Ask yourself, do I truly understand what my partner is saying? Ask more questions to get clarification. It's super important to be courageous to ask for clarification from your partner. It's a very mature relationship skill to have. Often times ones ego can prevent someone from doing this step, but it's so important to do, because often times the genesis of a fight or argument is when you don't know your partners perspective because you're so focused on your own. Some ways to ask for clarification are: "I don't know if I understand what you mean exactly. Could you clarify?" or "Can you explain exactly what you're trying to tell me?" 3. Show Tolerance You don't have to agree, but you must hold their perspective in front of them so they see that you are empathizing with them. Tolerating perspective means that you can see varying perspectives that are not just your own. Once you accept the idea that there can be multiple perspectives on this topic, you can empathize with each other, understand each other, and your conflict resolution skills will increase. 4. Remember you are on the same team Often times in conflict we like to stand on two separate lines and yell at each other and throw emotional insults and hurtful words. Often times when we struggle to see our partners point of view, it's because you're forgetting that you're actually on the same team as each other. So if you actually step away mentally and emotionally, and even physically from the conflict and take a moment to yourself, you'll be able to remember that this doesn't need to be a fight against each other, which automatically brings you two closer together and gives you a fresh perspective to resolve this situation.
