This early evening walk at sunset is around the lovely area of Penmon Point, also known as Black Point, on Anglesey in North Wales. Although this part of the island doesn't have a sandy beach it is such a beautiful, relaxing and quite unusual place and has many amazing things about it. We begin our walk overlooking the stunning Snowdonia mountain range which looked even more impressive today covered in the recent snow we've been experiencing. As we make our way across the rocky terrain you can see and hear Puffin Island just off the coast. The island is a Special Protection Area for wildlife and is uninhabited. One of the largest colonies of cormorants in the British Isles are here as well as Guillemots, Razorbills, Shags and Kittiwakes nesting. Atlantic Puffins also breed here and this is where the island gets its English name from. The island is known as Ynys Seiriol in Welsh. Grey Seals, Bottlenose Dolphins and Harbour Porpoises are also found in the area. There are day trips from Beaumaris town to Puffin Island between Easter and October to see the island, seals and birds. The black and white Trwyn Du Lighthouse, also known as Penmon Lighthouse, was built between 1835-1838 and is 29 metres (95 foot) tall. It marks the passage between Anglesey and Puffin Island and has "No Passage Landward" painted on the north and south sides. In 1922 Penmon became the first Trinity House lighthouse to be automated and in 1996 the lamp was converted to solar power. The lighthouse has a warning bell which has rung every 30 seconds since 1922 but recently, due to it being felt not reliable enough, it has been stopped and a new standard foghorn will be used in its place. While it was low tide and the rocky outcrop pathway exposed we were able to make our way down past the many rock pools to get a closer look at the lighthouse and back towards Snowdonia, Puffin Island and the cottages. We finish our walk down on the pebble beach looking back at the lighthouse with the moon just off to the side and the sound of the lapping waves.
