GOTTA GO FAST! I've been playing a lot of Sonic this past month, finally beating Sonic the Hedgehog without using continues... TWICE! I also managed to (almost) do the same for Sonic 2 and finally beat Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which I've been trying to do on-and-off for over a decade. The maps certainly help a ton. Given that I haven't done a chiptune cover of a Sonic song in years, I figured now would be a great time to finally do another one. Since I already covered Green Hill Zone from Sonic 1, I figured the right next step would be Emerald Hill Zone from Sonic 2. I originally considered doing this on the PC Engine, even finishing the bass part on it, but then realized that it'd make more sense to do the song on the Namco C30 WSG with Furnace tracker since that's sort of my bread and butter at this point (Namco and Sega together? Perish the thought! /j). Plus, it allows me to fit in all the parts of the song, which wouldn't fit as well on the PC Engine (the YM2612 and the SN76489 have 9-10 voices in total while the HuC6280 only has 6; the Namco C30 has 8). The toms that I managed to cook up for my Cross Your Heart over back in October didn't fit with the vibe of Emerald Hill Zone, so I had to tweak the sound of them to match. Honestly, I think I didn't do too bad with that. I tried to mainly stick with Namco wavetables with this cover, which I did except for one of Konami's SCC wavetables because of the octave sound it has. The bassline was particularly fun to do since I always felt like it could use some note slides in there, and I finally got to put them in myself (dreams really do come true ;D). It's such a cool groove, and you can hear them in there if you listen closely enough (or examine the FUR file in the downloads). I also tried to do something I don't usually do with my PSG chiptunes. Since one of the FM patches in the original Sega Mega Drive/Genesis song dips down and up with the volume, I realized that sort of replicating that would be necessary so that the longer notes that used the patch won't sound weird. Thankfully, I managed to do so with some tinkering, and it really does prevent the sound from sounding too elongated. You'll also notice that there's a part with a sine wave going up and down in an arpeggio. The original song had a two-part harmony on the SN7, but since I only had one voice left on the C30 to use, I just turned it into an arpeggio. I love doing sine wave stuff, so it was a nice little addition on my part. Overall, I really dig how this turned out, and I'm eager for some more Sonic action, primarily with Sonic Mania. That game I REALLY gotta beat; it's a blast. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this one. ^w^ Here are the downloads for this song: https://drive.google.com/drive/folder...
