On this episode of "Fitness Facts," I discuss “Little League Elbow” and ulnar collateral ligament injuries with Dr. Dan Lorenz. "Little League Elbow" and ulnar collateral ligament sprains/tears are both common overuse injuries that affect the medial elbow of overhead throwing athletes (such as baseball players, primarily pitchers). Elbow joint anatomy is reviewed at the beginning of this episode, and causes, prevention, and treatments for "Little League Elbow" and ulnar collateral ligament injuries are explained. Dr. Lorenz explains how high volume throwing performed continuously throughout the year often leads to injury, and the importance of rest for an athlete's throwing arm. We also detail how improper pitching mechanics, poor lower body strength, and a lack of mobility in the shoulder, thoracic spine, and hips, place tremendous stress on the medial aspect of the elbow which can ultimately increase the risk of injury. Dr. Lorenz is currently the Director of Sports Medicine at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, OrthoKansas, in Lawrence, KS. He earned a bachelor's degree in health sciences with an emphasis in athletic training from Grand Valley State University in 1999 and a master's degree in physical therapy from Grand Valley State in 2001. In 1997, he was an athletic training intern for the Chicago White Sox Major League Baseball team. From 2004-2005, he completed the Duke University Sports Physical Therapy Fellowship. Formerly, he was an assistant athletic trainer and physical therapist for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2005-2007. In 2009, he earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine in St. Augustine, FL. He is the former chair of the Sports Performance Enhancement Special Interest Group for the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy. In 2018, Dr. Lorenz was recognized by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as the Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Professional of the Year. He has been published several times in peer-reviewed journals and has been an invited speaker numerous times at local, state, and national conferences in sports medicine.
