It’s a crisis that is often unspoken in the housing conversation, it’s a crisis that is bringing about instability for families, it’s a crisis accelerating the loss of supply of homes. Unregulated short-term lets, a crisis that is destroying the fabric of communities across the Cities of London and Westminster. I am proud of my constituency in the heart of London, a city that welcomes millions of tourists from across the world every year. Many of whom adding to the vibrance and success of our thriving visitor economy. From the world class performers in the West End and Covent Garden to the international artists at the Barbican it is important we provide safe and flexible accommodation for visitors to remain an attractive destination and drives economic growth. However, the key driving factor to growth in London is the people that live here - the ones at the heart of it all making things tick, building relationships and strengthening the sense of belonging in our local community. That can only remain the case with a sufficient number of homes available for us in the Cities of London and Westminster. Currently, the lack of regulation means we don’t know the full extent of how many properties are being let out on a short-term let basis. This also means local authorities struggle to enforce existing legislation on short-term lets that exceed the 90-night limit. Furthermore, it allows bad faith actors to get away with not paying tax, costing our economy. The Government in 2025 announced a mandatory short-term lets registration scheme, which will be rolled out this year, ensuring both locally and nationally, authorities have access to the data necessary to understand the scale of the issue. I welcome this announcement and pushing for the registration scheme to be piloted here in the Cities of London and Westminster. Over the past year, I’ve launched both the Home’s Aren’t Hotels Petition and Short-Term Lets Commission. Throughout, I have met with residents who have told me some of their worst experiences with properties being let out from noise complaints to drug dens. We must go further to take action on illegal subletting and properties breaching the 90-night limit. Stay tuned to my Homes Aren’t Hotels video series, where I will be showcasing the groundwork, I’ve been putting in over the past year and what residents can expect from me in the year ahead to put an end to the short-term let crisis.
