Mental health is becoming an increasingly visible issue, with 1 in 4 people in England experiencing a mental health problem each year, and over 30% of young people reporting self-harm or attempted self-harm. But while these statistics are often discussed, there’s a side of mental health that receives far less attention — the mental cost of discipline, consistency, and progress, especially in the fitness space. In this episode, we explore what social media doesn’t show about training, self-improvement, and pushing physical limits. While exercise is widely known to support mental health, research suggests that when training becomes rigid, identity-driven, or appearance-focused, it can contribute to stress, burnout, and emotional distress. We break down the research, share personal experiences, and are joined by a special guest to discuss pressure, comparison, overtraining, identity, and recovery — and what a healthy training mindset actually looks like long-term. This is a longer, reflective conversation — so sit back, relax, and enjoy.
