Sixty-one-year-old Abdel Rahim Malouh, second in command in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine,(PFLP) a small PLO faction, paid his respects at PFLP leader Abu Ali Mustafa's grave before arriving home. Earlier on Friday, Malouh stood stood by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' side, while the leader made an emotional welcome address to the released prisoners after they arrived at the Muqata (presidential compound). Many of the freed detainees were greeted at Hawara checkpoint by tearful relatives and victorious drum beats on their way to their homes in Nablus. In Jenin, Muhanad Garadat arrived home after 18 years in Israeli prison. Garadat was welcomed with car parade in the streets, flares and dancing. Women and girls danced and clapped during the emotional welcome celebrations. More than 250 Palestinian prisoners freed by Israel on Friday were given a heroes' welcome that translated into pure political capital for the Palestinian president in his power struggle with Hamas. However, thousands more Palestinians remain in Israeli jails, and Abbas' aides said Israel must do more to bolster him after years of failed peace efforts. Most of those freed Friday were members of Abbas' Fatah movement, and the mood was one of jubilation across the West Bank. Israel holds about 9,200 Palestinian prisoners, most of whom were arrested during the past seven years of Israeli-Palestinian fighting. Almost every Palestinian family has had a member in Israeli jails at some point, making the fate of prisoners one of the most emotionally charged issues of the conflict with Israel. Hamas would be able to prevent voting in Gaza, meaning elections would be confined to the West Bank, underscoring the divide between the two territories.
