Infections acquired in hospitals are a problem present throughout the world. It is estimated that 5 to 10% of patients hospitalized in North America and Europe acquire a nosocomial disease while in Latin America, Asia and Africa Sub-Saharan is 40%. According to the World Health Organization, each year more than 1.4 million people in the world acquire infections in hospitals. Having an infection of this type causes the patient to extend their hospital stay, increasing the possibility of a long-term disability, generates greater resistance to drugs against bacteria, and increases costs for the patient, the family and the health sector, among others. In order to address this problem, the Research Center for Applied Chemistry has developed a compound for the textile industry based on nanotechnology, which has been patented. The purpose of this compound is for the textile industry to offer the medical sector a product that, when applied to uniforms and drapery, can reduce infections in hospitals. The use of this compound in medical clothing brings with it the following benefits: This compound gives the uniform the antimicrobial property during its useful lifetime. The nanocomposite has no toxic ingredients. The antimicrobial fiber used to manufacture clothing reduce spreading of pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, intrahospital infections are expected to be reduced. Web: www.ciqa.mx
