In this module, we consider how Syal sets up our understanding of Meena's cultural hybridity: (i) the empowerment of Meena through her cultural hybridity, combining her Punjabi and British identities, (ii) the cultural awareness or lack thereof in different characters, particularly focusing on Anita and her family's ignorance of racism and cultural insensitivity, and (iii) how Meena's longing for acceptance with Anita accidentally alienates her from her own secure home life. -- This lecture is part of a larger course exploring Meera Syal’s novel Anita and Me (1996).
