SKIING STATS: Run Name: Mott Canyon: Bill's [Gate #1] Location: Heavenly (Nevada Side) Rating: ♦♦ (Double Black Diamond) My Personal Rating Opinion: ♦♦ (Double Black Diamond) Lift Taken: Dipper Express Gate Accessed Through: Mott Canyon Gate #1 Maximum Pitch: 40 degrees Run Length: 0.5 mi. Vertical Drop: 879 feet PERSONAL ENJOYMENT RATING: 6/10 DESCRIPTION: Bill's a very steep chute accessed through Mott Canyon's most difficult gate, Gate #1. Of the runs that I've done through Gate #1 (Bill's, Snake Eyes, & The "Y"), in the past, I always thought Bill's was the easiest run while still being quite challenging. However, the last time I'd skied Bill's was in February 2021, the day right after a huge snowstorm. The coverage was quite amazing and thus decreased the overall challenge the run presented. Re-trying the run in much lesser conditions shot up the difficulty of the run so much, that I think the Bill's I skied on December 21, 2022 is harder than almost any run I attempted last season (except The "Y" which barely edges out 2022 Bill's in terms of difficulty). I learned the hard way that snow coverage changes the difficulty of the run immensely. The run felt much steeper and bare than I remembered. I previously did not have to use jump-turns on Bill's. This time around, they were almost required for each turn. Combined with all the shrubs and exposed rocks, skiing Bill's for the first time this season is one of the most exasperating things I've had to do on skis. But I'm really glad I did as it gave me a lot of confidence for future, even harder runs, that I'll be attempting later this season. Overall, I can't say I loved skiing Bill's this time around due to the sheer unexpected spike of difficulty, but I still had a good enough time for my first lap of the season in Mott Canyon. Note: I was supposed to reattempt The "Y" after I did Bill's. When I got to the bottom of the canyon, I saw that it was borderline unskiable and much more technical, as a result of the poor coverage, than I felt comfortable doing. I made the call that even though I could probably get down, it was just not worth it. I'll be back to re-attempt my hardest run from the 2021-22 season one day!
