How do you picture a city? A boring, monotonous concrete jungle? Or a blank canvas? Hanif Kureshi, founder of the St+art foundation, believes in the latter and has since embarked on a collaborative mission to transform urban landscapes. He begins by taking us through his journey as an artist and designer. Through samples from this project, Hanif explores how busy localities can be transformed into art districts that enhance the experience of a place, by taking on one wall at a time. Hanif Kureshi is the co-founder and artistic director of St+art India. St+art is a non-profit founded for the sole purpose of bringing artists from around the world to collaborate with Indian artists. Their art not just brightens the dull and erratically constructed neighbourhoods like in New Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad. It is also like a wave of fresh air that rekindles creativity and imagination in people who are so accustomed to the constant struggles of life in chaotic cities that they lose consciousness of their own power to imagine. In the words of Hanif Kureshi himself, “Street art has an entirely different perspective on art. The art world is unapproachable for the common man. In a gallery the intention is to go and see art. However, in public spaces, such as Shahpur Jat, the art comes to you. It takes you by surprise and the impact is greater when you are not prepared. The street is a democratic medium. The space always comes first and this differentiates street art from other art.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
