This week, in Episode 47 of Bas Paanch Minute, Dr Ayesha explains the science behind generosity and what actually happens in the brain when we give to others. She addresses why giving feels good, and why helping someone, offering our time, kindness, or a simple gift can lift our mood. The evidence shows that genuinely motivated acts of giving create what is known as the “helper’s high,” increasing feel good neurochemicals; dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins, while lowering the stress hormone cortisol. When generosity comes from a place of sincerity and connection, it improves our emotional health, physical wellbeing, and relationships. However, when it comes from social pressure or seeking external validation, it can have the opposite effect. So, when you next have an opportunity to be generous, take a moment to reflect on your intention. Giving from the heart benefits both the receiver and the giver.
