God does not seek our perfection He seeks our willingness to find the cracks and work our way though them; how we find light in the darkness. Today is about restoration, light and salt. What does God have to say? The Isaiah passage comes from Isaiah’s third prophetic book, when the Israelites are back from Babylon and have to work out how to restore Jerusalem. Start with good foundations which give a chance to rebuilding. We are one of the first generations to have to deal with a world where there is not space for everyone. We have to find ways to restore and refresh and rebuild our world. The passage from Matthew today comes from the sermon on the mount and in it Jesus tells the people that He sees them and recognises their hardship. Jesus compares them to salt, the most important commodity in the ancient world. How will you use your salt? Our faith must live in us like light with prayer and scripture reading. Like the Holman Hunt painting the “Light of the World”. The Light of the World knocks but we need to be waiting and willing to open it, as the handle to the door is on the inside not the outside. It is us who must let Jesus in. We are called to be restorers of the Light of the World, purposed by God and bringing restoration. We are the salt and light and are impowered by the light and flavour of God. Readings: Isaiah 58:1-9a, (9b-12); Psalm 112:1-10; 1 Corinthians 2:1-12 (13-16); Matthew 5:13-20
