Everything was heavy about Sanford including the two ‘assistants’ who were escorting her back to the member’s common room. Both appeared Asian in origin and although immaculately dressed in tailored evening suits Mandy could see several tattoos creeping from under starched cuffs and over collars. Corded muscles stretched the worsted cloth. Mandy guessed they had been sailors – their hands were calloused and their faces had the weather-beaten look of experienced seamen. They had both flanked Sanford as Mandy had agreed to join the Order of the Silver Twilight. Impassive eidolons as the man himself had smiled like a shark. “A woman of your impressive academic qualities will be an absolute asset to us, my dear. Several of your University colleagues are members – Miskatonic alumni are always valued here at the lodge.” Sanford had presented her with a badge with a constellation of silver stars behind a crescent moon on a field of dark blue enamel. “We do a little better than a piece of card here!” he chuckled to himself. “Please have a look around. Pop that on your lapel and our staff will know you have full access to our facilities. I do look forward to your first full meeting next… ah… Thursday evening. We always have a short welcoming ceremony for new members.” Sanford had briefly glanced at his black leather-bound diary on the walnut desk in front of him. Mandy intuitively guessed that next Thursday was the upcoming full moon. Once in the members salon and Sanford’s assistants had returned to their master Mandy had begun to explore the lodge itself. Several members were clearly socialising; others were reading and a few more wandered this way and that between various rooms. Mandy recognised no one – certainly she could not see anyone she knew from the University. “Excuse me?” said a voice by her elbow. Mandy started and turned quickly. A medium set man with a dark suit stood just behind her. He had a bald head, pencil moustache and thick rimmed glasses. “Oh my dear I’m sorry. Did I startle you? I’m called Stanway. Cedric Stanway. Carl asked me to show you around. There is so much to see! In fact, there is something very interesting in the Chamber right this minute. If we are quick, you should be able to see it.
