Chapter 56 – Luang Prabang Laos – Day4 - Mekong River Cruise After breakfast today, the Resort had arranged a full-day private cruise of the Mekong River. At 10:00, the boat pulled up to the river bank right below the resort. We set of on our cruise, with my guide Zar, myself, and the captain. The first out of town landmark we encountered was the China to Laos railway bridge across the Mekong. We passed a car ferry unloading after crossing the river. Half-submerged trees looked rather the worse for wear after collecting plastic from the flood waters. The first stop ‘Whiskey and weaving village’, of Chang Hai were we ere greeted by one of the workers in the whiskey distillery. I was given a sample to try and it had quite the kick. IN the waving part of the village, many artisans were creating beautiful hand-woven fabric on some rather low-tech looms. I visited the Sang Hai temple, at the top of the hill, which had a large collection of statues, including an unusual dog statue. Our next stop was the Manifa Elephant Camp, set in pleasant greenery on a bluff overlooking the Mekong. This was out spot for the included lunch which was a a great buffet spread with lots of variety. I especially enjoyed the buffalo meat kabobs. After lunch, an elephant, accompanied by its Mahout arrived. The Mahout gave us a 20-minute presentation about elephants and their care, then invited us to get up close and personal with the elephant. Next stop was the Pak Ou Caves have small temples within. When we left the caves, the captain pulled the boat out into the middle of the river, then turned the boat so it pointed downstream and we headed back towards Luang Prabang. Later, I sampled the local Luang Prabang beer, and had a delicious buffalo stew and salad for supper.
