Mature Virginia Muzzleloader Buck Down, Opening Weekend Success Rut Hunting The Mountains

Opening weekend of the Virginia muzzleloader season is off to a hot start. Warm temperatures and calm wind conditions made for loud and crunchy conditions. Opening day I hung my saddle in a thermal hub along a drainage and had several small bucks, does, and one mature buck pass by. The next day I got in a little bit late and bumped a mature buck not 20yds from my tree, daylight savings time got the best of me. About an hour later I ditched the stand setup snuck over the top of the mountain and found a hot doe. About an hour after she ran by I caught a glimpse of a buck above me on the ridge, after a quick adjustment I was able to weave a shot through the timber and dropped the deer where he stood. It was a perfect setup within the root ball and fallen tree. Don't be afraid to leave your stand and make a ground setup, it pays off sometimes if you're lucky.
