Our first full day in the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" brings us to its most populous and recognizable city, that is if we distinguish today's destination and her twin city to the east. You might think of cities like Pittsburgh and Detroit as industrial behemoths of the American past, but Minneapolis also sits up there as one of the United States' premier manufacturing centers. As this locale had been home to the Mississippi River's only major waterfall held incredible force, the area's historic settlers were quick to realize that Minnesota's mighty waters could be harnessed in order to contribute to great wealth and prosperity in the northwestern frontier. Those who had been fortunate enough to find work in this rapidly growing city soon came to appreciate how this quirk of geography literally, powered their livelihood. Supplying the country with endless amounts of lumber and baking flour through its numerous mills, this city spawned iconic brands and attracted immigration for decades. The age of industry is over and the "Mill City" that once was has now left behind a pile of sawdust and flour in its wake, solemnly to be remembered by future generations. From its integral role in shaping the course of the modern city, you can find water, Minneapolis' primary natural resource everywhere today as always, from the locality's falls, lakes and rivers, to the astounding collection of water-adjacent urban parks, to the fairly common precipitation you can expect to experience. As we prepare our entry into the final string of cities upon the Frontier Americana Tour, let's carry some appreciation for the many substances inextricably linked to Minneapolis' mythos and lore.
