Woolen Warmth was inspired by a moment when I rediscovered a wool sweater knitted by my grandmother during my childhood. At the time it was made, I was too young to understand its value. As my sense of self began to form, I dismissed the sweater as old-fashioned, preferring more modern and trendy clothing. Only later did I fully realize the weight of what had been given to me. My grandmother had already been suffering from glaucoma when she knitted the sweater. Compared to ordinary people, she had to devote far more time, patience, and physical effort to complete it. This realization became the emotional starting point of the piece, giving rise to feelings of regret, reflection, and nostalgia. The music recalls my childhood memories of living in my grandmother’s home, and the quiet moments in which she accompanied me as I grew up. The main melodic lines are carried by the flute and the cello, which engage in a gentle dialogue throughout the piece. This interaction represents an imagined conversation between my grandmother and myself. The harp and piano provide a soft and restrained accompaniment, creating a warm yet fragile sound environment. A defining characteristic of the composition is its constantly shifting melodic direction, which creates a sense of uncertainty. This instability reflects my inner anxiety toward the unknown progression of my grandmother’s illness as she grows older. Rather than offering resolution, the music remains suspended between warmth and unease, mirroring the coexistence of love, memory, and quiet apprehension.
