This year’s parade was led by Mark Rago, crowned King, alongside Queen Andrea Alonzi, as the Gumbo Brothers Brass Band filled Ocean Front Walk with the sounds of traditional New Orleans–style brass. Spectators lined the boardwalk, many dressed in festive attire, as the procession moved through the heart of Venice. The event continues a local tradition that dates back to 1935, when Venice launched its first Mardi Gras–inspired festival. Modeled after the famed celebration in New Orleans, the inaugural event unfolded over three days and featured the ceremonial arrival of King Neptune by outrigger canoe, the coronation of Queen Venetia, and a royal procession along the beachfront. In its early decades, Venice’s Mardi Gras became known for elaborate floats, oversized plaster-of-Paris heads crafted in local studios, and a lively street carnival atmosphere along Windward Avenue. By 1941, the celebration had expanded into a four-day festival that drew hundreds of thousands of attendees and included children’s treasure hunts, aquatic competitions, beauty pageants, and a formal Mardi Gras Ball. Nearly a century later, the modern parade reflects both the neighborhood’s artistic roots and its enduring spirit of public celebration.
