This exercise strengthens the muscles in your larynx, which house your vocal cords. It improves airway closure during a swallow and helps to decrease breathiness while talking. Please do not perform this exercise if you have a heart condition or uncontrolled high blood pressure. Take in a breath, let a little out. Hold your breath tightly in your throat while you bear down for a few seconds. Now vocalize “oh” while you are still pushing. Relax. While bearing down, you should feel tightening in your throat, similar to when you lift something heavy. Bearing down can be achieved several ways: pushing on the palms, pulling on the fingers, pushing on the arms of a chair or a table, pulling up on a chair, or if you need a little extra help, use a tennis ball or stress ball between the palms. Repeat 5-10 times as prescribed by your speech therapist
