. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . When German Tango-Blues hit ILONA was acquiring its popularity within the years 1926-28, a young musician from Romania appeared in Berlin with the aim of continuing his musical education. He started then also to create his first compositions – his name was Elly Roman ! Did he get to know the popular at that time tango “ILONA”, made by already famous Will Meisel ? We cannot be sure. Anyway, and it is a fact, Elly Roman composed his own tango with the same title "ILONA" only a couple of years later and published it still in Berlin, 1932, with a personal dedication to the top Romanian singer at that time – Christian Vasile. Judging by a melody and harmony, as well as musical accents, his ILONA is something totally different from the earlier piece. On my channel, this tango is presented in a piano form, performed by JP, according to the mentioned above, 1932 sheet music edition. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Elly Roman (1905 – 1996) was a Romanian composer of Jewish descent. He studied first harmony and counterpoint with Alfonso Castaldi, harmony and composition with Filip Lazar and then, turn of the 1920s/1930s, at the Berlin Academy of Music he studied composition, musical forms, orchestral conducting, with respectively: Georg Schünemann Franz Schreker, Juliusz Prüwer and Paul Hindemith. After returning to Romania, he took a post of the conductor at the Maria Ventura, Alhambra, and Colos theaters (1937–1940), Barașeum (1941–1944), Atlantic (1945–1948), and Savoy (1948–1949). After that he became a director of the Revue Theater on Bucharest (1949–1952). His first composition, "Gratitudine," was published in 1924. Since 1956, he had been a member of the Union of Composers and Musicologists. He composed over 3,000 songs, including music for revues, comedies, musicals, choral music, operettas, and lieder. (wikipedia) With thanks to Daniel-parlophonman, who donated a large part of the documentation without which the visual side of the last two videos entitled ILONA would not have been possible. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
