Independent candidate Grace Ngabirano Akifeza has called on voters in Kisoro District to reject any political campaigns that seek to exploit religious differences, warning that such tactics only deepen divisions and hinder the region's development. While canvassing support for the Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament seat in Bukimbiri Sub-County and Nyanamo Town Council on Tuesday, Akifeza expressed concern over a rival candidate's use of religious influence in her campaign. Akifeza emphasized that leveraging religion for political gain undermines social harmony and stalls progress. "We are all equal before God," she said, urging the electorate to prioritize unity over divisive rhetoric. Akifeza, who is running on an independent ticket, outlined her key priorities, including improving infrastructure, expanding access to clean water, and combating poverty if elected. She pledged to advocate for policies that would uplift the community and create lasting development. She is competing against several candidates for the seat, including Rose Kabagyeni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), who Akifeza accuses of benefiting from irregularities during the NRM party primaries. Other contenders include Musanase Juliet of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Aisha Chimpaye of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Sultana Salim Tana of the National Unity Platform (NUP), and Meble Ingabire of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC). Campaigns for the by-election, which began Monday this week, will continue until September 12, according to the Electoral Commission's timeline. Voting is scheduled for September 14. The seat became vacant following the death of former Kisoro District Woman MP and State Minister for Defense and Veteran Affairs, Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, who passed away on September 7, 2024, due to a heart attack.
