A young missionary's faith is confronted when he helps a man that could be a believer, psychotic or demon. Maybe all three... Originally produced for the Gig Harbor 72 Hour Film Challenge. Interlocution is the first film in the Slam Initiative by DSME... and the 3rd to be released. Interlocution aims to be a film entirely defined by its viewer. It shows almost nothing in a Bergman-like tale on the qualms of religious matters. While demonstrating great respect for its characters and religious origins... Interlocution serves as a conversation for conversations. After the final shot... You are to ask yourself what you really saw. As you should with every event in life. Director Dulvlu Spa takes a leap forward in creative restraint by construing a pious story through allegories of his own outlook on faith. He directs Michael Delisle into his first subdued role as a character that only means good, but fails to understand good and evil. Director of Photography Tyler Templeton delivers smooth imagery reminiscent of parchment paper that follows the biblical nature of the film. Cameron Schmidt composed four unique tracks to interplay throughout the film... following the narrative beats at every possible turn. This was the film that started the era of DSME's film slams - movies produced within a weekend. But this was also an era of "personal" films meant to challenge the viewer. For the first time DSME actively sought to instill thought... not just put on a show. Still, there was a show to be had. Due in part to its short and simplistic nature, this film has become the most tight and well paced offering by DSME... even a year after its initial "completion". That's by design. Because again, Dulvlu wanted to "Experiment" by for once making a film that doesn't have random explosions, racy humor, epileptic title effects, or people turning into confetti. Clown stuff, basically. Potentially, this is a seminal moment for DSME. The team would love to find more introspective source material to work with. To make everyday things and relatable stories profoundly relatable to audiences. That's the kind of new territory that Dulvlu wanted to produce after going all in with quintessential DSME works "Rip N' Run" and "Utility Carol". He had done everything within his style. It was time for a new style. And because of the precedent started by this seemingly simple film... DSME produced 6 shorts within 2019. All of them of a serious nature; stemming from a personal story from the director. In this way, it may be the most important shift for DSME since Dulvlu got his first camera. {Additional Credits) Poster by Dulvlu Spa and Eleen Byat Original title design by Eleen Bayat font: Kelly Ann Gothic
