1950's Juvenile-Delinquency Part Two: The Image Of Rock n' Roll

The relationship between 1950's-era youth crime and then-mainstream adult fears regarding the then-new music is explored in detail in this second entry in the "1950's: Nostalgic Myths And Historical Reality Series." This is a look at how Dick Clark created a softened version of the music with the "clean cut" image of "The Teen Idol" and "The Regulars" on "American Bandstand," as a response to specific incidents of violent youth crime during early 1958. We also see how, in the 1970's, Dick Clark and a neo-doo-wop group from Columbia University, debuting at "Woodstock," transformed the '50's delinquent image, into a humorous, and fictional, parody during the '50's Nostalgia Fad of the 1970's to market rebranded rock n' roll as "oldies." Brief histories are given of specific youth gang-related incidents and individuals involved (the murders of Alvin Palmer, Michael Farmer, and In Ho Oh, individuals such as "The Capeman" and The Egyptian Kings street gang) and how their real-life tragedies were erased from collective memory, following America's withdrawal from Vietnam. Correction: The story of Ed Bielcik of The Sinners describes his father as having served in Iwo Jima. it was actually his uncle who served at Iwo Jima, while his father had served, and went briefly missing while injured, at The Battle of the Bulge.
