How might dis/ability allow us to re-imagine mothering in a time of austerity? This keynote presentation responds to this question by looking back at the requirements of ‘austerity parenting’: all mothers must invest in their children’s futurity so that they place no burden on the state. Drawing on feminist and critical disability studies approaches, Runswick-Cole looks forward to ask how it might be possible to disrupt ‘austerity parenting’ practices. She concludes by invoking ‘the disability commons’ as a collective and affirmative approach that offers an alternative to individualised models of parenting that oppress dis/abled children, and (m)others.
