WARNING: Some Tri-ang Transcontinental locomotives have a metal chassis that is directly connected to a rail for the motor power eg R55. The rear bogies are also metal but are insulated from the rails by the plastic wheels. It appears that the locomotive's rear bogie can be electrically connected to the chassis by its rotation pin. Therefore metal couplers are also probably connected to that rail supply. If the first coach/wagon has metal bogies and couplers - and replacement axles are only isolated on one wheel - it is possible to get a short through the locomotive coupling in one order of the consist. Solution is to mark the orientation of any modified coach/wagon that will connect directly to such a locomotive. Unfortunately common affordable replacement axle/ wheel assemblies only have one wheel isolated. It will also apply to connected modified coach/wagon bogies. --------------------------------------------------------------- The original idea was to re-use the Tri-ang Transcontinental coaches' bogie axles by fitting modern H0 metal wheels that could pick up power from the track. However - this would still have the poor rolling friction of the original. Eventually using HO pin axle/wheel assemblies with near-matching 10.6mm hubs was easier. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/374309814803 A good YouTube video showed the general method - but the fixing of the pin bearings was not appealing. • Replacing/Changing The Wheels On Your Olde... Here is an alternative method that uses a fortuitous fit of the 3mm screw thread on black nylon pillars as a plug to lock the bearings without burning any bridges. The position of the wheel tracks and the axle rolling friction fit can be adjusted as needed. It has not yet been tested for a long period. The plugs seem immovable in normal operation - but can be popped out by gentle pressure if necessary. Work is in progress to 3D print a pick-up box that will snap-fit into the bogie..
