In this thought-provoking webinar held on July 15, 2025, the Master’s Degree in Humanitarian Action and Peacebuilding (MAHAP) graduate Jelena Vujanovic presented her research on "Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian Diasporas' Engagement in the Localisation and Decolonisation of Humanitarian Aid and Recovery in Lebanon." Drawing from her experience as both a humanitarian practitioner and member of the ex-Yugoslav diaspora, Jelena explores how diaspora communities contribute to humanitarian response despite being largely invisible in formal aid systems. Through interviews with 22 key informants, she examines their complex identities, transnational connections, and vital contributions through remittances, technical support, and advocacy. The conversation with Dr Brigitte Piquard delved into critical questions about what "local" really means in humanitarian contexts, the challenges of diaspora engagement, and how these communities navigate between insider/outsider roles. Their discussion highlights how diasporas serve as powerful but underutilised actors in crisis response, especially as traditional aid systems face funding cuts and political constraints.
